Wikis, they are tools which businesses rely on these days. They are a very important part of companies by the way employees and owners communicate and work with one another. For example, I recently research a company called Pixar, which is the iconic producer of animated films and have won several awards.

Pixar have use wikis internally to manage film production. Pixar have used wikis to help coordinate new computerized animation tools and helped employees communicate more effectively and interact with each other better. Wikis have helped Pixar create AND released a recent and successful film in 2008 called “WALL-E”.

There is also another similar case of a company also use wikis to help employees interact in projects and communicate more effectively. Red Ant is a web design firm based in Sydney that also uses wikis. It is not only for effective use for employees but also used to interact with there customers.

These two companies are only two examples of companies which are benefiting from the use of wikis. Wikis help collaboration of both employee to employee and also employee to customer as well. Wikis also help on informing people about new things as well as a great tool to use if there is a internal project need to be completed. Wikis are a great tool. However, with every 2.0 tools there are security risks in using them. Security is a big risk, also leaking a information is another issue. Wikis aren’t the only thing which have these issues, any new technology has risks to be attended to. Wikis are still a great tool.

I have recent tried using a wiki and found that it would be a great tool to use if a large business had a great deal of people working great distances away. This way using a wiki, it would solve the distance issue as well as employees having a great deal of flexibility and scalability. I found with a little use of the wiki I was using I had the presents of having spelling and grammar checks due to people editing my work as well as new users comments of new information they didn’t know. It was a great new experience of a use of a web 2.0 tool.

I have researched a company uses blogging tools to communicate with employees about what is going on in there shifts and the latest information released throughout their company. The company, Disney uses blogging tools to communicate to each other to past information on to one another. That is one great benefits that is working for Disney in a way that the employees coming off shift are communicating and tell the other employee coming on shift the latest new about the company.

However, there are risk to this, too many. Due to using web 2.0 tools, there are many risk, such as there are many hackers with use of public services like twitter and so on. There could also be a risk of to much information leaked out due to human error, or even a lack of mis understanding of who needs to know of that information.

Gov 2.0, what’s this mean? Gov 2.0 involves direct citizen interaction in conversations in government services and policies. This is done through all web base technologies such as Web 2.0 tools like blogging and wikis. By doing this the government is showing collaboration, openness and engagement to people everywhere in Australia.

The Victorian Public Service (VPS) is one of the services the government is enhancing by placing innovative practices into it. Some innovative aspects are ranging from the use of Twitter to keep the public informed during emergencies through to using Facebook to bring together small business owners and prospective owners for networking and information sharing.

The Victorian Government has also opened access to public sector information because of the 2009 Parliamentary Inquiry into improving connection to Victorian Public Sector Information. Opening up public sector information is a great benefit to increase interaction with the community and realise social benefits.

The organisation I have chosen to do my blog for this week is also a organisation I work for. I love working there, its always a change from my normal life. Sizzler Australia is a organisation which is a sector of hospitality. It is a family restaurant which gives guests great food and services. Sizzler was firstly introduce in America, and a couple of years later it was introduce in Australia. From this date there are 26 restaurants here in  Australia.

There are many risks that can happen in every organisation, for example Sizzler could easily be a company that could have many risks coming straight for them. Sizzler has just incorporated employees to go online and check the latest updates of new meals and recipes for the new season. They have also incorporated so that employees can login and email other employees on their website. They are all very great things but can also resolve to having risks.

Confidential information is one risk Sizzler could easily have. Having a website which does that, what will happen when employees post on there Facebook or Twitter about new meals and salads coming, also bits on ingredients on how to make certain things. This is then leaking information out to other people and so on. Secrets are being busted, as well as shying people off different meals of how it is made or even what is in it.

Trademark infringement is also another risk that can affect Sizzler. Sizzler’s trademark can be used through social networking sites and make people comment on that page which isn’t even the organisations real site. This leads to bad information being received to customers which then gives Sizzler loss of profit. Also Copyright material is a risk just like the confidential information risk. This is all caused by employees posting to much information on sites.

On a different note, Discrimination by employees can also be a risk to many companies in many ways. Internally, it could be employees adding or following other employees due to there race. Also employers might be the same to employees. Employers might give a job to someone but not the other due to not adding him on Facebook or Twitter and so forth. Discrimination could also be an employee discriminating about a customer or employer through Facebook or Twitter.

Cyber-bullying risk can also take place with Sizzler. It is similar to discrimination and how it might start. However, this would mostly be started internally and then dragged out to a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter.

Lastly the termination risk can also affect this company. A employer can not sack a employee for after hours activity unless the employee does not understand the relationship of employment. This is a example of a employee going out to a club and has one really big night. The employee can not do nothing about that unless of that situation.

As you can see, there are many risks that could happen for many organisations. Sizzler is just a example of one of many organisations.

I have been recently looking at different case studies about different topics, and I have found a couple very interesting. They clearly explain how the use of social tools and other applications on the internet can bring benefits to a lot of people but also risks.

The benefits I have seen through analyzing a couple of cases studies can really help how we would live life today. Firstly Mike Hartigan, a placemaking project manager had found a way to save $500,000 by doing a little changes to a hotel project. That is one great saving however, Mike had made a webpage discussing his experience and how he achieved it. He then received a heap of comments from other project managers and has been replying to them to present and future.

Another example of a benefit is the green development. Placemaking were announcing a sustainable development. With this happening, many webpages were created discussing different problems and actions to take. This was then helping Placemaking thinking about how to resolve different sustainability issues. Both of these examples are very beneficial by the way they help companies with thinking and produce different assumption. This is called collective thinking. Companies can increase there knowledge, efficiency, productivity and staff engagement with just using collective thinking.

However, there are many risks in Enterprise 2.0 due to incorporating Web 2.0 social tools. For example, security is a risk with using social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook. This is because the limit of information you can put on the site. Loss of control of information is also very risky because its a little like security. Information is very hard to keep secured on social networking sites. Risks from security and loss of control can be incoming risks like malware as well as outgoing risks such as data leakage.

Reliability can also be a risk for Enterprise 2.0. It can be a risk in 2 ways. Firstly, if your collaborating with another company via blogs or other social networking tools, what if that information that is being sent to you isn’t actually from the company. It might be a hacker? Reliability of information will not be very good in that position. Also the resources that you would be collecting could also be false and harmful. Secondly, if your doing work on a social network site and all of a sudden the site is down for a few hours. That also isn’t very reliable in that situation.

Therefore, Enterprise 2.0 has great benefits, but with every technology you use, there is always risks. When using these technologies, caution must be taken.
